VAT schemes

Three schemes. One right one for you.

Picking the wrong VAT scheme can cost thousands. We model all three against your real numbers and recommend the one that wins.

Standard

Standard VAT scheme

Rate applied

For businesses with significant VAT-able expenses — building, manufacturing, retail, hospitality.

  • Reclaim VAT on every eligible purchase
  • Best when input VAT is high
  • Detailed line-by-line accounting

VAT on every sale, reclaimed on every purchase. Most reporting overhead — most reclaim potential.

Flat rate

Flat-rate scheme

Sector rate

For service businesses under £150k turnover with few VAT-able expenses — consultants, IT, marketing.

  • Pay one flat % of gross turnover
  • 1% discount in year one
  • Simpler quarterly returns

Watch the “Limited Cost Trader” 16.5% trap — we run the test every quarter so you never get caught.

Cash accounting

Cash accounting

VAT paid

For businesses with slow-paying customers — construction, agencies, B2B services under £1.35m.

  • Pay VAT only when customer pays you
  • Automatic bad-debt relief
  • Cashflow protector

Combine with the standard scheme — it’s about when you account for VAT, not which scheme you’re on.

Why it matters

Books done badly cost you twice.

Once at the bookkeeper. Again at year-end when the accountant has to fix it all. We don’t do that to you.

FAQ

Bookkeeping: common questions..

Quick answers to what most clients ask before signing up. Anything else? Phone us.
How much does monthly bookkeeping cost?
From £95/month for sole traders under 50 transactions, up to £295/month for VAT-registered limited companies with 300+ transactions and payroll. We quote a fixed monthly fee after a free 30-minute call — no surprise add-ons, no per-transaction billing.
Yes — every quarter, every client. We file directly with HMRC under MTD well before the 7-day deadline. You approve the figure by email; we file and confirm the exact payment instruction.
Most new clients come to us mid-mess. We do a one-off catch-up project first (priced separately, usually £300–£1,200 depending on backlog), bring everything current and HMRC-compliant, then start the monthly service. Email us a screenshot of your current ledger and we’ll quote within 24 hours.

Absolutely. We work fluently in Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and Sage. If you’re on something we don’t support (or just spreadsheets), we’ll either learn it or recommend a migration — but only if it’ll save you money. Migrations are included free.

Yes, if you want us to. We can set up branded invoice templates, raise them from your job sheets, email customers and send automatic chase reminders at 7, 14 and 30 days. Most clients see their debtor days drop by 30–40% in the first quarter.
Bookkeeping is the day-to-day: recording transactions, reconciling banks, filing VAT, raising invoices. Accounts are the year-end summary: statutory accounts, CT600, Self Assessment. Most clients use us for both — see our Business Accounts & Tax page — and save by bundling.
